The Black Jacobins, published more than seven decades ago, is one of the very few books I have ever read essentially without stopping, stuck to my chair, thrown into a world, propelled onward by a riveting story, angered, exhilarated, confused, even exhausted by the scope of what C.L.R. The title, whispered to me with a near religious admiration by a teacher, itself already taught a lesson: The story of the French Revolution was also the story of a Caribbean revolution. Like many other readers, I remember well my first encounter with The Black Jacobins.
